Chapter Nine

“May I have this dance,” Nathan said. The reception was in full swing, and the dance floor was rapidly filling. He had fulfilled his obligation as co-best man. He’d posed for even more pictures once Jillian and Miles entered the ballroom and had danced with the bridesmaid. Isaac had wanted to make the toast and Nathan had agreed. Isaac knew just what to say to amuse the audience all the while making the bride and groom happy. Nathan had never liked having the spotlight shine on him, so he was relieved when his official duties had been completed. Now it was time to party.

“I suppose so,” Alexandra said, a smile on her face. He noticed that she smiled easily and often. It was a sincere smile that reflected her inner happiness. And it was quite disarming.

She placed her soft hand into his. He felt a spark of electricity at the contact. He was becoming increasingly attracted to her, so his reaction wasn’t unexpected. Nor was it unwanted. Filled with anticipation of holding her in his arms again, he led her to the dance floor. The ballroom was enormous and even with the elaborately decorated tables spaced around the edge and the stage where the band was now playing, there was still plenty of room to dance. The band was playing a ballad and Nathan pulled Alexandra close, then wrapped his arms around her tiny waist.

He’d been looking forward to holding her next to him from the moment she’d opened the door this afternoon and he’d seen her standing there. Dressed in a reddish dress that accentuated every inch of her body, she was quite easily the most beautiful woman he’d ever seen. Even in the sea of jewels and designer dresses, she stood out.

Alexandra’s wraparound satin dress was demure, but there was no disguising her sexy body. Over the past few days, he’d tried to convince himself that the rightness he’d felt the last time they danced had been a figment of his imagination. Now, with her soft breasts pressed against his chest, he acknowledged that he hadn’t exaggerated things. In fact, he might have undersold his reaction.

They moved together as if they had been dance partners for years as opposed to only one night before. This wasn’t something that he did frequently, but he was willing to make an exception tonight. Truthfully, he had made several exceptions since Alexandra had become a part of his life.

That thought shocked him and he stopped dancing. Alexandra stepped back and gave him a questioning look. He got himself together and pulled her against him once more, and they began to sway to the music. Though his body moved in time to the beat, his mind was miles away. One question kept echoing though his brain. Why had he thought that Alexandra had become a part of his life? Sure, the notion held certain appeal—too much appeal for his comfort—but he had his plans, and she didn’t fit into them.

He knew rationally that he could make a place for a woman in his life if he wanted to.
